Teacher Loan Forgiveness


Assuming that you teach full-time for five full and sequential academic years in a low-pay elementary school, secondary school, or educational service organization, you might be qualified for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on your Direct Loan or FFEL program loans.

Qualifying Conditions

You must have been employed as a full-time teacher for five complete and back to back academic years, and no less than one of those years must have been after the 1997-98 academic year.
You must have been a teacher in an elementary or secondary school that:-
Is in a school district that meets the requirements for federal funds.
Comes under the Designated Low-Income Schools for Teacher Cancellation Benefits.

Teachers with proven knowledge and teaching skills in reading, writing, mathematics, & other areas of curriculum can get up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness. While a highly qualified full-time mathematics or science teacher can get up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness.
